Pregnancy & Postpartum Pelvic Therapy

pelvic health physical therapy and birth preparation

The Motherhood Journey Comes with a Lot of Change

At Rome Physical Therapy, we support you through every stage of pregnancy and postpartum.

During the first trimester, we help you navigate early pregnancy changes and manage symptoms like low back pain, SI or pubic symphysis pain, tailbone pain, urinary frequency or leakage, constipation, and pressure.

In the second trimester, our focus is on maintaining strength and pelvic floor balance as your abdomen grows and load increases on the pelvic floor. This stage is all about preventing symptoms, supporting your core as it stretches, and keeping your body strong and stable. Maintaining strength throughout pregnancy is key for minimizing common aches and pains and setting you up for a smoother postpartum recovery.
We focus on:

  • Core strength to avoid coning and doming

  • Pelvic floor strength to prevent urinary leakage

  • Pelvic stability to decrease or prevent low back, tailbone, or hip pain

  • Building a healthy balance of your deep core

As you move into the third trimester, we shift to preparing your body for labor and delivery through pelvic mobility, pelvic floor relaxation, breathing strategies, and birth prep education, including:

  • Hip mobility and positions to help open the pelvis for labor and delivery

  • Labor positions

  • Birth positions

  • Perineal stretching to help reduce tearing

  • Mind–body connection for labor and birth breathing

  • Learning how to use and lengthen your pelvic floor during labor and delivery

In the postpartum stage, you can come in at any time—whether it’s 2–4 weeks, a few months, or even years after giving birth. At every stage, it’s important to regain control of your pelvic floor and core, reconnect your mind and body, and address the changes that occur during pregnancy and birth.
We provide a thorough assessment and work with:

  • Scar tissue from vaginal tears or C-section incisions

  • Urinary leakage or urgency

  • Bowel issues such as constipation, hemorrhoids, or excessive wiping

  • Pain with insertion (painful sex, tampon discomfort, or difficulty using tampons)

  • Aches and pains including low back, hip, or tailbone pain

  • Core and pelvic floor reconnection

  • Prolapse prevention and management

How Our Therapy Helps During & After Pregnancy

Your pregnancy is one of the most important times in your life, and it’s one where you will go through so many changes. It starts with the prenatal period when your baby is growing inside you. It’s crucial to take good care of your health during the prenatal period, and physical stability is part of that. I know the pre and postnatal apps and programs are tempting but if you are not using the correct muscles, what’s the point? Getting appropriate exercise under the supervision of a obstetrics physical therapist can help you manage the symptoms of a range of prenatal health conditions and can prevent you from having women’s health problems in the future.

You can also use the prenatal period as a time to prepare for labor and delivery. At Rome Physical Therapy, we can help you prepare for childbirth with classes that help you find length in your pelvic muscles. The better connection of mind and body, the easier your labor and delivery will go, and the easier your recovery will be.

Once you give birth, it is just as important to take care of you and recover from not only childbirth but also from the many months of pregnancy. Many new mothers experience a lot of pain, disconnect, and lack of physical support in the postpartum recovery period and may have issues like incontinence, constipation, sexual issues, and more. You can alleviate pain and lessen the symptoms of many postnatal health problems by working on the strength of your core and pelvis muscles.
