When pain or tightness in your chest starts, it’s easy to think you didn't move enough today or you think “it’s normal” because you have breast cancer…
Is that how you’re feeling right now? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, I help people who feel this way at Rome Physical Therapy. You see, with pain and tightness in the chest wall, everyone asks the same questions… Why does my my chest or under my arms hurt so much? Why isn’t this tightness and pain going away? Am I going to have to live with the tightness and heaviness forever? Why is there pain and tightness underneath my armpit? Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad information out there that causes people to live with this pain and tightness for way too long. Here are the most common myths I see when it comes to discomfort after breast cancer treatments... Myth #1: Thinking the tightness in the chest will go away with time. Myth #2: Believing that the pain in your chest or armpits will go away with time. Myth #3: Assuming the tightness is “normal” after a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or radiation therapy. Myth #4: Believing that since you tried other healthcare professionals (maybe even Physical Therapy) in the past means that it won’t work now. Myth #5: Relying on “Dr. Google” or YouTube for exercises that didn’t make any difference (or maybe even made your pain worse!) Myth #6: Getting relaxing massages to temporary relieve pain and tightness, only to find it comes back after the massage wears off. Have you been making these mistakes? If any of this has happened to you, I want tot remind you that you’re not alone. In fact, I see people just like you every day. And that’s why I’ve created a free guide for you. It goes over tips to try after breast cancer treatment to reduce your pain and tightness (you can click on the button above to download it). But maybe you feel like you’ve read a lot of free information on the internet, and really just want to talk to someone about your problem. If that's you, then I have a special opportunity for you (one that VERY FEW clinics offer). I save a limited number of spots each week for time for people who are not sure what to do about their pain and tightness. That way, you can tell a professional your story, and get your questions answered first, before ever making a commitment to book an appointment. Here’s the most important thing… Most people get stuck trying to make a decision about what to do next. They go days, weeks, months (even years!) without taking action. So the next important thing is to take action. Take Care of your body and get back to doing the things you love without fear or making this worse and or pushing through the pain by clicking below at one of the options listed. Hope to hear from you soon, Dr. Megan Rome, PT, DPT, CLT |

Becci As an active, 51 year old, I chose not to reconstruct after my bilateral mastectomy. I just wanted to heal, get back to my active schedule and “just feel normal.” Lymphedema and quality of life was a real concern for me. With that very first evaluation, Megan put my fears to rest and assured me that with proper exercise, care and knowledge, the chances of lymphedema decreased tremedously! Along with a focused stretching and exercise routine, Megan utilized state-of-the-art techniques to alleviate tightness and discomfort.
Within a few short weeks, I had almost full range of motion back. Megan’s vast knowledge, paired with her caring and soothing nature, made what I expected to be an uncomfortable scenario, actually very relaxing. Our sessions allowed me to talk through many of my concerns and questions while she was giving treatment. Traci I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and treated with chemo, surgery, and radiation, which resulted in lymphedema. I could not have dealt with the difficulties of lymphedema and continued in my recovery without Megan’s guidance. I’m so grateful to have her on my healthcare team! |
Rhonda From the beginning, I felt at ease working with Megann, despite some initial nerves about the idea of getting physical therapy in the first place. We met prior to my surgery – bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and lymph node removal—she knew ahead of time what to plan on and the stretches she taught me afterward were just what I needed to target the muscles that were tight and sore post-procedure. Progress went smoothly, I never felt rushed or forced, and I didn’t feel like I dreaded going to sessions because I knew we’d work together. She always wanted me to heal at my own pace, without pushing so hard that I would risked feeling painful from the work in the sessions. Together we hit every goal and now I have my flexibility back and more strength in my arms, perhaps even than before this all started. Megann is wonderful. She’s knowledgeable and trustworthy. I felt completely comfortable working with her and would do so again. |
